Our New Thanksgiving Tradition Growing up the classic Thanksgiving tradition was the Skins Game. I used to look forward to it every year. But after some alterations to the format which ended up ruining it in lieu of improving it, the annual Turkey Day weekend event went away forever and we never had anyone try and come up with a worthy substitute. Until our two heroes Phil and Tiger stepped up and gave us the inaugural Match a couple years ago. We then got the Match II thanks to Covid with Tiger and Peyton Manning taking on Phil and Tom Brady on a rainy day at Medalist Golf Club. This Friday we get the third installment, and perhaps the most entertaining.
This time Lefty teams with Charles Barkley to take on the returning Peyton Manning and Steph Curry, who is a known plus handicap and has teed it up on the Korn Ferry Tour. Manning is a player and fared very well as Tiger’s partner the last time around, so how exactly is this a fair match since Chuck might be more famously known for being a horrible golfer than an NBA hall of famer? Well the format is modified alternate shot and on a lot of hole there will be “Chuck Tees” where Barkley gets to tee off from a shorter yardage than the others. In modified alternate shot, each player hits their tee shot and then swap balls for their approach. So Barkley will hit from Mickelson’s drive and vice-versa. Following the second shots, the teams will then decide what they want to play for their 3rd and alternate in from there. Barkley’s swing has apparently been transformed and that awful, blood curling, hitch isn’t as prominent as it once was. But he always said it was worse when he got nervous, and the pressure will definitely be on this Friday.
The Match 3 airs Friday on TNT at 3:00pm and will feature a star-studded panel of reporters. Brian Anderson will provide play-by-play alongside Trevor Immelman and NBA star Andre Inguodola. Cheyenne Woods and Gary McCord will be along as on-course commentators while Eli Manning will join the crew on the pregame show. They will be playing Stone Canyon Golf Club in Oro Valley, AZ.
Tiger and Charlie Ready to Battle Tiger Woods has announced that he and son Charlie will tee it up in the PNC Father-Son Championship at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club in Orlando on December 17-20. This is a great event where any card carrying tour member can play with their son or daughter. Usually made up of mostly Champions Tour players, this event has famously featured Lil John Daly the last few years. It is super fun to see the offspring of the game’s greats not only play and swing like their pops, but to see the similarities in mannerisms like simply walking off the green or bending down to fix a divot. Charlie Axel Woods has already begun to follow in dad Tiger’s footsteps. He has been beating kids older than him in AJGA events all year with Tiger on the bag. With the exception of a few cell phone vids, this will be the first time we get a glimpse at little man’s game. Here’s to the media treating him well and he and pops having an enjoyable time together.
Enjoy the game and each other,
