Jason Day Wins PGA Championship
Jason Day wins PGA Championship to secure the first major victory of his career. The win at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, Wisconsin validates a great career which had only one thing missing, a major championship win. Day defeated the field in historic fashion, becoming the first golfer to win a major at 20 under par. He closed the final round with a 5-under 67 to outlast Masters & U.S. Open champ, Jordan Spieth, by three strokes.
Day was overcome with emotion and started to shed tears after tapping in the winning putt on the 18th. The win ended a streak of crushing disappointments at major championships, where he had come so close so many times. At this year’s British Open, Day fell one stroke short of a playoff after leaving his putt a few inches short. After another tough loss, he went north of the border to get back on track. He won the RBC Canadian Open, setting the stage for his historic performance at Whistling Straits.
Jordan Spieth, who fell three strokes short of Day in second place, took home a rather significant accomplishment of his own. Another great major championship performance allowed him to overtake Rory McIlory as the world’s number one golfer. He also joined Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Rickie Fowler as the only golfers in the modern era to finish top-5 in all four majors in a season.
