Jordan Spieth Wins John Deere Classic
Jordan Spieth wins the John Deere Classic to earn his fifth victory on the PGA Tour. He was able to outlast 46 year-old, Tom Gillis, in a two-hole playoff. Gillis was in search of his first career win on tour, but fell short after sending an approach shot into the water on the final playoff hole. Gillis, who first played on tour before Spieth was even born, earned a bid to The Open Championship this week. This will be the first major tournament for Gillis since the PGA Championship back in 2011.This was Spieth’s second win at TPC Deere Run and his fourth of this season. He became the first player to collect four wins before The Open Championship since Tiger Woods did it in 2000.
Spieth will turn just 22 years old in a few weeks and already has 5 PGA Tour victories. Since 1940, only Tiger has more tour wins before the age of 22, with 6. Jordan will now turn his attention towards the 144th British Open at the Old Course in St. Andrews. He will look to win his third consecutive major title and join Ben Hogan as the only golfers to win the Masters, U.S. Open and The Open Championship in the same year. If he is able to win at St. Andrews, he will go to the PGA Championship with a chance to complete the calendar year Grand Slam. He would be the first golfer to do so since the establishment of the Masters.
