Rory McIlroy Wins Wells Fargo Championship
Rory McIlroy Wins Wells Fargo Championship for his second victory at Quail Hollow. Rory completely dominated the field on his way to setting a new tournament record score of 267. The 26 year old Irishman shot a 69 on the final day of play to finish at a blazing 21 under par. In the process, he broke Anthony Kim’s tournament record of 16 under which was set in 2008. On Saturday, the world’s number one player shot the lowest round of his career with a 61. The career-best round broke the Quail Hollow single-round record which McIlroy himself set in 2010.
The win was Rory’s 11th career victory on the PGA Tour and his seventh win in 24 events. At just 26 years old, McIlroy is in the midst of one of the best runs since Tiger Woods. In the past 12 months, he has finished in the top 20 on 20 different occasions. Sixteen of those finishes were top 10 and 13 were top five. In that same period, he finished first or second 11 times and has missed just two cuts. In his past eight PGA Tour starts, he now has six top-10 finishes, including a win at WGC Match Play just a few weeks ago.
“I’m a more controlled player these days. I’ve learned how to finish things off,” McIlroy stated. “Everything is firing on all cylinders for me.”
