Rory McIlroy Wins WGC Match Play
Rory McIlroy wins WGC Match Play in San Francisco, CA one day before his 26th birthday. Rory made golf history by becoming only the third player in the past 75 years to win 10 times on the PGA Tour by the age of 26. The other two players to accomplish this are golf greats, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. The world’s number one player reminded everyone in golf that he is still a force to be reckon with. After Jordan Spieth’s amazing victory at The Masters, many thought he had a chance to challenge McIlroy for that number one ranking.
“I think everyone, not just me, but everyone on Tour was inspired seeing Jordan do what he did at Augusta,” McIlroy said.
“But it’s always nice to have people pushing you, and I feel like he’s one of the guys doing that right now.”
Rory defeated Jim Furyk and Danny Willett in the semifinals before downing Gary Woodland 4 and 2 to win the title. This match was nearly never in doubt as Rory led the entire way through. With this victory, McIlroy has now won four of the eight WGC/major titles and has shown no sign of slowing down.
“Match play is a format that I’ve always enjoyed. I feel it’s a format that I do well in and I excel in.”
“It’s really satisfying to get that first win stateside (this year), no matter what format it is, it’s always nice to get a trophy,” McIlroy said.
