Right now golf is the hero we need, and deserve. Did you used to get together with buddies once a week after work at an open gym and play hoops? Well now that gym is closed and you don’t want to be guarding anyone in the low post these days. Chances are your summer softball league is also cancelled. We need golf now more than ever; and it needs us. It’s time to work on your game or get your spouse/significant other to join you. Perfect time to also get the kids started out in the yard or at the range. Take junior out for 9 and just let them ride in the cart. See if they show excitement and interest. Take that 2 hour drive and play that course you have wanted to play but never got around to. Join that Wednesday night league your coworkers have been begging you to join for years. What else have you got to do, right? I guess you could organize the garage again…
In the last ten days, 17 states that initially mandated that courses be closed, have reopened them under safety protocols. By May 17th, 90% of golf courses across the U.S. will be open for play. As of now, Washington D.C. courses remain closed, but it isn’t too much of a chore to drive into Maryland or Virginia to play. Especially now since traffic will be minimal. I played a course here in Youngstown called Reserve Run over the weekend with my wife. Now wives and household members are permitted to ride together. Otherwise it’s one player per cart. The average sized cart fleet for a public course is about 50. That’s only 50 players on the course about every 4 hours. You have just cut the course’s revenue in half after an already trying start to the season. But Reserve Run went a different route with an investment that has certainly already paid dividends. They installed plexiglass dividers between the driver’s and passenger seats of each cart. This was approved by the state and permits them to allow 2 players per cart, no matter the circumstance. This was a big reason they did 201 rounds on Saturday and the courses only able to allow one per cart did half that. With limited staff, course managers and pros are putting in the hours and need our support more than ever. So get out and play the game you love. Golf loves you too.
Driving Relief With the announcement of the match between Tiger, Peyton Manning, Phil Mickelson, and Tom Brady being made last week, Taylormade could not be outdone. Having their biggest endorsed gun already involved in that match, they called on their other staffers to put together a 2-on-2 match to benefit Covid19. Rory McIlroy teams with Dustin Johnson to take on Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolfe in a 2-man skins game. The event will take place at Seminole Golf Club on May 17th and be broadcasted on NBC, Sky Sports, and Golf Channel. United Health Group has pledged $3 million to be donated to the American Nurses Foundation and CDC Foundation. Farmers Insurance has also put up $1 million into a birdies and eagle pool that will support Off Their Plate, which benefits frontline healthcare workers. Seminole Club, a majestic Donald Ross creation, was rumored to be a potential spot for the first charitable made-for-tv match announced. Located in Juno Beach, Fl, it is one of America’s most revered clubs and has never been shown on television. The event is scheduled to air Sunday the 17th at 2pm.
