Shane Lowry Wins WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
Shane Lowry Wins WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to claim his first career victory in the United States. He entered the final round trailing Jim Furyk and Justin Rose by two strokes at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Lowry, the 48th ranked player in the world, shot a final round 66 which included four birdies to finish at 11 under. That was enough to edge out Bubba Watson, Furyk and Rose. With the win, Lowry became the first non-PGA Tour member to win a WGC event since Martin Kaymer in 2011. It was his first victory since the 2012 Portugal Masters, ending a drought of two years and 299 days. The victory also earns Lowry a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour.
All eyes now turn towards Whistling Straits, where the PGA Championship will begin Thursday, August 13th. The final major of the year will feature many storylines to keep your eye on. Perhaps the biggest storyline is the return of the world’s number one player and two-time PGA Championship winner Rory McIlroy. After an injured ankle sidelined him for the Open Championship, McIlroy will attempt to defend his 2014 PGA Championship crown. Rory will have to battle Jordan Spieth, who is in search of his third major of the year after falling just short of history at St. Andrews.
