Zach Johnson Wins Open Championship
Zach Johnson wins Open Championship in St. Andrews to claim his second major championship. Gale-force winds and torrential downpours halted play on Saturday, leading to only the second Monday finish in tournament history. During an exciting final round, a number of players were in contention, battling for a chance to win. Those players included Johnson, Marc Leishman, Louis Oosthuizen, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth. Spieth, who was seeking a historic third major title in a row, was in contention all the way up to the final hole. He was able to sink a number of dramatic putts to stay in contention, but fell short of the leaders when he failed to birdie the 18th.
At the end of the final round it was Zach Johnson, Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen who were heading to a playoff, tied at 15 under par. At the end of the playoff, it was Johnson who stood alone to claim the Claret Jug. Johnson now joins Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Sam Snead, Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win the Masters and a British Open played on the Old Course. Johnson is known as one of the most humble and laid back players on the PGA Tour and was overcome with emotion after the tournament.
